Hyundai’s Model Naming Conventions: From 0 to Fubar in 4 Years

Hyundai is one of the world’s biggest automakers, and the most visible of South Korea’s business and industrial acumen. So you would think a company that can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of Toyota and pre-bailout GM would be pretty consistent with its model naming conventions, right?

Well, not exactly. When Hyundai first launched the i30 hatchback in Europe, Australia and other markets, it seemed that familiar nameplates such as Elantra and Sonata would soon be dead and buried. Not so. In fact, the i30 CW (basically, the station wagon version of the i30), is still sold in the U.S. as the Elantra Touring.

And there's another thing. When the “i” and “ix” naming convention was introduced by Hyundai, it seemed to me that the “i” names would be for cars and the “ix” for the brand’s SUVs. This too was not to be. In Australia, the Hyundai Sonata is sold as the i45 and the upcoming ix20 is a B-segment MPV, not a mini SUV.

So what gives, Hyundai? Why can’t you keep the names internally consisted? Audi never had this problem. A’s for cars and Q’s for SUVs. Oh, I forgot about the TT and R8. Damn it, guys! It can’t be that difficult to stay consistent. It irks me, as I’m a pedant and a stickler for uniformity.

When it comes to engine of the vehicle, Kappa version is outfitted with an engine aptitude of 1.2 liters. Additionally, it comes with an automatic transmission and genrates 81 bhp of solid power and maximum torque of 11.4 Kgm @ 4000 rpm. Hyundai i10 has all-aluminum, 4 cylinder engine with features such as Double Overhead Camshaft (DOHC). By far I think the cars best feature is its stunningly good looks. Hyundai makes some good look cars but the Equus is simply at another level as far as styling goes. The front end design features on the car include a large grill, an Equus specific symbol, and a very modern state of the art headlight system which adds to the styling of the car. Rather than a Hyundai, the car looks like a high end sedan that challenges other manufacturers for the best styled car. Anyone driving around in this car should rest assured that people are admiring the cars looks as they drive by. The first time I saw this car on the road I didn't know what it was and immediately began researching the car on the internet; it simply captivated me.

The company claims that new i40 "will move the company towards a ‘modern premium’ positioning that will bring high-end features and vehicle quality to Hyundai customers at accessible prices."

Hyundai has not released any details on the engine line-up, but it is believed that at launch, the i40 will be offered with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol with direct injection and an output of around 170-horsepower, plus two variants of the a 1.7-liter turbo-diesel with 115 HP and 136 HP.

One of the important elements that Hyundai missed on while launching the i10 and i20 was the overall design. The i10 and i20 are not that impressive with their exterior looks. Hyundai India, it seems have taken this important element into consideration and have now incorporated excellent styling into the Hyundai 30. Having features such as dual front door, curtain airbags, active headrests, seatbelt pretensioning and seatbelt reminders, the hatchback measures 4,245 mm long, 1,765 mm wide and 1,480 mm high. A wheelbase of 2,650 mm offers significant interior space for a vehicle of this size. Total luggage space is 340 liters with the rear seats upright.

Hyundai has released new details for the facelifted i10.

The facelifted i10 comes with a brace of new or revised engines: a new 1.0 three-cylinder Kappa engine replaces the 1.1 Epsilon unit, while the 1.2 is upgraded with 13% more power and 9% less CO2.
The 1.0 now averages 67.3mpg on the combined cycle.

The new Blue model is powered by the all-new 1.0-litre three-cylinder Kappa engine, which returns combined cycle fuel consumption of 4.2 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of just 99g/km.

The upgraded 1.25-litre engine is 33 percent more efficient than the unit it replaces, packing 63kW, using 4.6 litres/100km and emitting 108g/km CO2.

Inside, the cabin has been upgraded with a new instrument cluster (with an eco-shift indicator), improved seats, additional chrome accents, and a rear seat cup holder. Four trim levels are available, but all models come nicely equipped with air conditioning, a six-speaker audio system (with iPod connectivity), power windows, and central locking.

Hyundai hasn't been idle, of course. In fact, the company is finishing up a new sporty compact 2-door to take Tiburon's place in the lineup. It's a production version of the Veloster Concept presented at the Seoul and Los Angeles Auto Shows way back in 2007. Why the long delay? We can only guess that the concept had to be reengineered for global crash-test standards and that Hyundai decided to make other alterations in light of market research on the targeted 20-something audience.

As things stand now, the front-wheel-drive sportster is slated to start sale sometime before the end of 2011, according to recent statements by Hyundai Motor America CEO John Krafcik. Britain's CAR magazine says the Veloster name is not locked in, but is "one of the working titles," so we'll use it here for what is bound to be a 2012-model introduction.

But there is one vehicle class where Hyundai has been conspicuously absent and that's the small sporty/performance-car segment exemplified by the Mini Cooper, Scion tC, and Volkswagen GTI.

True, demand for such cars has been very low in recent years, which is one reason why Hyundai gave up on its entry, the Tiburon hatchback coupe, after the 2008 campaign. But some analysts see the segment making a strong comeback in coming years, if only because small and affordable sporty cars have such strong appeal to the young first-time buyers that most every automaker wants to attract and hold onto. Some companies have already gotten the message, witness the recently released Kia Forte Koup from Hyundai's sister brand, Honda's 2011 CR-Z hybrid coupe, a redesigned 2011 tC, and the upcoming Toyota "FT86" and joint-venture sibling Subaru "0864."

Hyundai states the production model is to receive a direct-injected 1.6 liter 138hp 4-cylinder engine, 6 speed manual gearbox, and 40 mpg fuel economy. A turbocharged 210 horsepower version of the same engine will be available later on. The car is different from many competitors as it has one door on the driver side and two on the passenger side in US bound models. European models will have four regular doors. The Veloster will also utilize Hyundai's new BlueLink system, which is similar to OnStar used in GM vehicles, providing customers with automatic crash notification, vehicle diagnostics, etc. Pricing is expected to start around $17,000 and head up to around $21,000 with options

Hyundai has released a teaser photo of the Hyundai Veloster that will be revealed next Monday at the Detroit Auto Show. As expected, the Veloster will be a five-door hatch with what looks to be a six-speed manual transmission.It’s not the Tiburon replacement people had hoped for (but who knows what other tricks Hyundai has up its sleeves?)As I previously wrote (based on others’ reporting) the Veloster will be powered by a 1.6 four cylinder with direct injection delivering some 140 horsepower.

The 2011 Paris Motor Show has offered a number of interesting first time reveals, vehicles just now hitting the market and others planned for release over the next 3-4 years. Major auto shows are always good indicators where the market is headed and which vehicles we'll be driving a few years out.

Korea's Hyundai Motors is on a tear, rising from the eleventh largest automaker in the world in 2000 to the fourth largest manufacturer in 2011. 2011 Hyundai Veloster Concept Really realased

While official details on powertrain options remain scarce, it has been reported that the Veloster will be offered with a 1.6-liter unit boasting direct-injection tech and an output of around 140-horsepower. The four-cylinder unit is said to be hooked up to a dual-clutch transmission returning up to 40mpg (5.8 lt/100km).

These are the latest spy pictures (see the scoop video here) of Hyundai's upcoming compact coupe based on the 2007 Veloster Concept. The South Korean company's answer to the VW Scirocco and Honda CR-Z hybrid will act as a replacement to the Tiburon, otherwise simply known as the Coupe, and it will be offered with naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines.

The 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is a solid value

The 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is a solid value, providing rear-wheel drive sports car abilities for a lot less than the competition. Last year, it was named a finalist for Motor Trend's coveted title of "Car of the Year."

The Genesis Coupe is also available with a 306-horsepower 3.8-liter V6. While the Genesis Coupe 3.8 V6 is notably quicker at the drag strip, the turbo four is the more enjoyable version of the car. Reasons are many: Much of the V6's extra 100 pounds is carried on the nose, which tends to overwhelm the front tires. The four also has much lower first and second gears in its six-speed manual transmission. The combination of big torque and low gearing gives the four cylinder strong acceleration in the speed range that can be used on public roads without entering the Highway Patrol's Frequent Offender Program.
